By my fifth dip in the sharinbai bath, the workshop had turned humid and close, teechigi wood simmering in enormous kettles nearby, the smell of wet bark and tannin settling into the back of my throat. My arms were sheathed in rubber gloves to the elbow. The liquid was heavier than I expected, thick enough that I had to lean into each dip. The dye master next to me said the same two words every time I surfaced. Mou ikkai. One more time. The mud itself, the step that actually turns the thread black, I only managed once, time didn’t allow for more. Oshima Tsumugi (大島紬) goes through the full cycle roughly eighty times before it’s finished, and by dip five I understood the question I’d actually come here to answer: what does it take to make a black that isn’t simply black?
I came to Amami Oshima to see how Oshima Tsumugi gets made, one of Japan’s most celebrated textiles. The beaches didn’t hurt either. I’ve written before about Visvim, Kapital, labels that spend years earning the right to reference a tradition instead of just borrowing its silhouette. What I found here went past all of that. Even the most careful fashion label is working one layer above where this story actually starts.
An Island Has Its Own Time
I had wanted to visit Amami Oshima for a long time, mostly because of a phrase I kept running into and never quite believed. Oshima Tsumugi gets called one of the world’s three great textiles, alongside French Gobelins tapestry and Persian rugs, and I wanted to see for myself what could possibly earn a small island in Kagoshima a place in that sentence. Compared to Okinawa, the island still feels largely untouched, fewer visitors, less development, beaches quiet enough to make you forget what day it is.
There is a custom on Amami that has nothing to do with textiles, and I only heard about it in passing, but it stayed with me the whole trip. Obon, the mid-summer festival when ancestral spirits are believed to return home before departing again a few days later, has its own local rule here. On the last day, people don’t go into the water. Not the sea, not the rivers. I hadn’t heard this yet when I swam in that same beautiful water without a second thought. The reasoning varies depending on who tells you, spirits returning to the other side, currents that turn unpredictable, an old caution passed down until nobody quite remembers why.
Amami is also an unusually important place ecologically and geographically. Roughly six out of every ten bird species recorded in Japan, more than three hundred of them, have been documented here, some as permanent residents found nowhere else on earth, most as migrants using the island as a waystation between the mainland and Southeast Asia. It sits at a hinge point between two climates, not quite tropical, not quite temperate, where neither fully wins, and that in between quality seems to run through everything else about the place too.
I bring this up because I don’t think Oshima Tsumugi could have been made anywhere else, and not for romantic reasons. A craft this exact, this slow, needed a place with enough of its own internal logic to develop away from outside pressure to speed up. The Obon custom and the bird migrations aren’t decoration for the textile story. They’re evidence of the same thing: an island that kept enough distance from the outside world to grow its own rules, on its own timeline. Oshima Tsumugi barely left Amami for most of its early history. What later became one of the most sought after textiles in Japan spent centuries developing almost entirely for the island itself, only reaching outside markets in any real volume after 1871.
A Technique That Arrived by Water
Kasuri, the resist dyeing technique behind Oshima Tsumugi’s patterns, didn’t originate in Japan. Most textile historians trace it back to India, from where it spread through Southeast Asia, into Cambodia and Thailand and what is now Indonesia, before reaching the Ryukyu Islands, the chain Amami geographically belongs to, and eventually the Japanese mainland, likely by the fourteenth or fifteenth century. It’s a slow migration measured in centuries, carried by traders and travelers who had no idea they were seeding a technique that would eventually produce something as specific as what happens on Amami today.
I’m not going to trace that whole route here. There’s a reason I’m writing this as the first piece in a series rather than one long essay. Later I want to follow kasuri on a completely different path, one that moved north and west instead of east, along the Silk Road through central Asia and into the Iberian Peninsula under Islamic rule, arriving at an island in the Mediterranean that looks nothing like Amami and produces a version of the same idea that looks nothing like Oshima Tsumugi. Same seed technique, grown from entirely different soil. That comparison needs its own space. For now, what matters is that the technique found its way to Amami by water, and the island did something with it that no other stop along that route quite managed.
What I Saw in the Workshop
Teechigi, a native shrub also called sharinbai, gets chipped and boiled for hours in enormous kettles until the liquid turns a deep reddish brown, thick with tannin. Thread goes into this bath first, then out to the mud fields tucked into the undergrowth nearby, dark, iron rich pools worked by hand and foot. Dye, mud, dye, mud, dozens of trips between the two before the color holds. The tannin and the iron react on contact and the thread turns black from the inside, not sitting on top of the fiber the way a chemical dye would, but pulled into it.
That part I could participate in, at least a fraction of it. What I only watched was the part that actually makes Oshima Tsumugi what it is, a technique called shimebata. Before any dyeing happens, the silk thread that will eventually become the kimono is bound, not by hand with string the way most kasuri is made elsewhere, but woven. A separate, temporary fabric gets constructed using tightly twisted cotton thread crossed at hard angles against the silk, on a dedicated loom built for exactly this purpose. Where the cotton grips the silk, no dye can reach it. Where the silk is left exposed, it turns black in the mud. After dyeing, the binder sits down and cuts away every strand of that binding cotton, one at a time, revealing tiny white dots against black silk. Look at the thread alone at this stage and you see nothing but a strand of scattered dots, no image, no hint of what it’s building toward. The picture only exists once thousands of these threads meet each other on the loom.
None of this happens by feel. Every thread is dyed according to a plan that exists before a single strand touches the loom, and when I asked about that very first stage, the design phase, I didn’t have much to say back. Before computers, the pattern was mapped out by hand, dot by dot, on graph paper, essentially what we’d now call a pixel, and the finer the grid, the harder the work became. Dyeing and shimebata happen first, and only after all of that is finished does the real weaving, done entirely by hand, even begin.
I watched her work, cutting cotton threads free from silk with a precision that looked less like craft and more like surgery. If her placement is off by a millimeter when the shimebata cloth was first constructed, the entire pattern shifts and the whole piece can be ruined. This is, as far as I can tell, one of the most exacting textile techniques anywhere in the world, and almost nobody outside Japan has heard of it.
Roughly eighty trips between the dye bath and the mud, sometimes closer to a hundred, before the black holds the way it needs to. Not one black. Layers of it. All of that happens before a single thread reaches the loom. Once weaving starts, a millimeter of misalignment means going back and starting that section over. The weaver told me that on a good day she gets through about fifteen centimeters. A kimono length takes six months to a year.
There used to be dozens of workshops producing Oshima Tsumugi across the island. Today there are roughly ten companies still doing it. What’s kept it alive this long, beyond stubbornness and skill, is the fact that the craft was always structured around division of labor rather than a single master doing everything, which is also why no single name ever gets credited as the artisan behind a finished piece. Dyeing, binding, weaving, finishing, each stage has traditionally belonged to different hands. That structure is what’s letting a small number of artisans now work from home on individual looms, feeding pieces back into a shared production chain, instead of requiring everyone to work under one roof. The tradition adapted its organization without abandoning its standard.
The Question
I left the workshop and went to bathe at Tomori beach afterward, thinking about the whole process over in my head. What’s most remarkable is that there are eighty layers. The whole exhaustive process and effort of making a bolt of cloth is beyond my understanding, but somewhere along the way, someone decided that soaking once in the mud wasn’t enough, and neither was forty, and eighty became the number that actually worked. Nobody wrote that down as a rule first. The cloth taught them.
We talk a lot, in the world I usually write about, regarding speed as the thing worth optimizing for. Fewer steps, faster iteration, less friction between an idea and its execution. Oshima Tsumugi is built entirely from the opposite, and it has survived not despite that, but because of it. Which leaves me with a question I don’t think I can answer yet, one I’ll be circling back to when I get to Mallorca. What exactly is lost when a technique this specific meets a demand for speed, and is there a version of adaptation that keeps the eighty layers intact while still finding a way to survive the century we’re actually living in?
